How to choose hat styles for a retail store
A practical guide for retail buyers on building a balanced hat range across seasons.

Stocking hats for a retail store is easier when you think in categories and seasons rather than single products. A small, balanced range sells more consistently than a wide range of similar styles.
Start with year-round basics
Baseball caps and flat caps sell in every season. Classic colors such as black, navy, khaki, and gray are the safest starting point. Add one or two seasonal colors once you know what your customers like.
Add seasonal categories
Sun hats and bucket hats peak in spring and summer. Beanies, trapper hats, and fleece-lined styles sell from autumn to early spring. Order seasonal styles early enough to have them on the shelf before demand starts. Our guide to choosing hat materials by season explains which fabrics suit each season.
Check the fit range
Adjustable styles with a side buckle or strap fit most adults, which reduces size-related returns. For fixed-size styles, check the head circumference before ordering. See hat sizing explained for wholesale buyers and our size guide.
Keep the range focused
Several nearly identical styles split sales and tie up stock. Pick the best version of each style and offer it in a few colors. With a per-style minimum, mixing colors inside one style is an easy way to test which shades sell best.
Order samples first
Before a large order, review samples for material, stitching, and color. It is the simplest way to avoid surprises. See how sample requests work.
Next step
